Pelican Youth TournamentDing Ding Ding…….Round Two! ! ! ! ! Who would have thought that the fishing at Utah’s Pelican Lake would be as good as it was with the unstable conditions that were present. With the winds howling and the rain pounding through several days of pre-fishing, Saturday morning came and the gloves were off as the youth members of the Utah Bass Federation took to the lake to fish the states second qualifying event for the 2006 season. With only three trophies to pass out in each age bracket, at 6am Saturday morning the race was on for best of the best and once again Zach Alexander returning two time state champ had come up with a new saying, “If you feel Froggy, JUMP”. Zach attacked the lake throwing a modified frog and brought over ten……count’em, 10 lbs. of fish to the scales to take home the 1st place trophy for the eleven to fourteen aged group, and with a perfect 200 pts season, sealed the deal on moving forward to the first TBF/FLW youth championship to be held this upcoming August in……… Travis Richardson brought in over eight and half pounds himself to the scales to take the 2nd place trophy with Ryan Mezenen bringing in over six pounds to take 3rd place and to close the ceremonies for the younger aged group. What can I say, other than “Another storm’s a brewing”……… Just two points separate four of Utah’s youth in the fifteen to eighteen age group, and this one is going to go down to the wire. Top dog Sunny Hawk brought his A Game Saturday as well, as he blazed a trail to the top of the leader board bringing in over eight and a half pounds of large mouth to the scales to take 1st place for the older kids. Sunny has taken every opportunity possible to soak it all in as he learns all he can from “The Best”, father Roy Hawk. Roy works at Fish Tech, located in Salt Lake City and is one of Utah’s top touring pro’s. His skills and service towards the youth program have been greatly appreciated along with all the donations coming from Fish Tech. Zack Later pulled in 4.38 pounds to take the second place position with Colten Ferman hot on his heels taken the trophy for third place with 2.22 pounds. By the days end, all the youth who participated caught plenty of good fish and the weather took a turn for the best for the ride home. Our last qualifier for the youth will be held at Pineview Reservoir up Ogden canyon on July 8th, with the weigh-in taking place at approx. twelve noon. All that are interested in watching are more than welcome to do so and we encourage you to come see what it’s all about. Always Remember, “Keep A Sharp Hook” and “Don’t Forget to Take A Kid Fishing”. See you on the lake J Roger Mezenen Youth Tournament Director Utah Bass Federation
